PwC hosts Capability Enhancement Workshop, Educate Nigerian Journalists

PwC Nigeria, a renowned professional services business, once again hosted Nigerian journalists to its annual Capability Enhancement Workshop for Journalists.

Participants in the one-day virtual session came from both traditional and new media channels. It included incisive talks by subject-matter experts on a range of subjects with the goal of strengthening the capability of journalists and improving their capacity to carry out their responsibilities successfully while also better positioning themselves to take advantage of upcoming opportunities.

The yearly workshop, which is in its ninth year and has trained over 500 journalists throughout the years, is a key part of PwC Nigeria’s corporate responsibility strategy. It was established in acknowledgment of the crucial role that the media plays in society, particularly in Nigeria, where they continue to enlighten and educate the public.

Taiwo Oyedele, Fiscal Policy Partner & Africa Tax Leader, PwC, in his opening remarks, said: “Our support for the media through this workshop and the media excellence award is in line with our purpose which is to build trust in society and solve important problems. It is a demonstration of our strong belief that to deepen democracy and ensure good governance, the media must perform its role optimally and professionally and this is reflected in the quality of reporting, in the capacity of individual journalists to carry out research and investigations, in the independence of editorial judgments, and in their ability to use technology as an enabler.”

Among the presentations at the workshop was one led by Nkiru Aimienoho, Associate Director Cybersecurity, Privacy & Resilience, PwC Nigeria, on “National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy: Implications for the media.” This session provided a brief history of the national cyber strategies and policies and then delved into details of the National Cyber security Policy & Strategy for Nigeria, highlighting the implications for the media. The session also highlighted the risk of cyber attacks in media and entertainment and used a number of real-life incidences to draw out key lessons.

Nigeria’s National Development Plan 2021-2025: Lessons from the past and insights for the future was discussed in a session led by Andrew S. Nevin (Ph.D), Partner and Chief Economist of PwC Nigeria. Before moving on to a thorough investigation of Nigeria’s National Development Plan (2021-2025), the session gave a brief overview of the current situation of the Nigerian economy and examined earlier national development plans. It also discussed some of the difficulties and solutions associated with Nigeria’s development planning using a case study of Vietnam.

The last session was led by Taiwo Oyedele, Fiscal Policy Partner & Africa Tax Leader, PwC, and was titled “Reporting Politics and the Economy: Critical questions and expectations for Nigeria’s next political leaders.” This session which is very relevant for the time as campaigns commence for the 2023 general election, took the participants through the most critical issues for the country which should guide journalists in their coverage of the campaign, analysis of the candidates’ manifestos and reporting of the news during the election season.

The PwC Media Excellence Awards galanite, which is set to take place virtually on Thursday, October 6, 2022, after the workshop on capacity enhancement.
