Daily Briefing: Mali's Coup Leader Fires Interim President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister

On Tuesday, Colonel Goita, the interim vice president and head of the August 2020 coup that led to the formation of the transitional government, announced the dismissal of the interim President and Prime Minister, a day after the two were detained in what has been described as a coup.

Goita accused both leaders of violating the transition charter by failing to consult him in the selection of the new administration.

A mediation team from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met Tuesday with Colonel Assimi Goita, who led the junta and has held the position of vice president in the transitional government.

A joint statement issued Tuesday by ECOWAS, the United Nations, African Union and other international bodies called for the release of President Bah N'Daw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, who were detained in the capital, Bamako, and taken to the military's headquarters in nearby Kati.
