In Africa, agriculture accounts for two thirds of livelihoods and food accounts for two thirds of the household budgets of poor people.

Agriculture in Africa has a massive social and economic footprint, but in spite of it, this sector apparently receives very little attention from the governments. Apart from commercial agriculture, which covers a relatively small share of crop production, the use of agricultural inputs that is, improved seeds, inorganic fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides has been much lower in Africa than in other parts of the developing world.

More than 60 percent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa is smallholder farmers, and about 23 percent of sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP comes from agriculture. Yet, Africa’s full agricultural potential remains untapped. To succeed, Africa’s efforts to boost agricultural output must also rely on greater use of science and technology.
