The 2024 Firdaous Initiative for Academic Excellence (FIAE) International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition was conducted in Zaria city, northern Nigeria, from June 24-28, 2024. At the end of the competition the University of Nairobi won, Cavendish University, Uganda came second, University of Ilorin third and Adekunle Ajasin University came fourth respectively.
The 2024 FIAE Humanitarian Law Moot Competition organized by Firdaous Initiative for Academic Excellence (FIAE). FIAE noted that this edition, four pertinent issues was focused on: Cyber Warfare – Exploring the legal implications in the increasingly digital battlefield; Destruction of Cultural Properties – Examining the prevention and response to the destruction of cultural properties in times of conflict; and Influence of social media in Modern Conflicts – Scrutinizing the role and ramifications of social media in spiralling global conflicts.
According to the organizer, undergraduate students from all African universities were eligible to compete in the FIAE International Humanitarian Law Moot. Teams of two African university students, preferably a male and a female, were requested to submit heads of argument in a fictitious International Humanitarian Law case before the yet to be established African Court of Justice and Human Rights. Prior to moving on to the oral phase, teams were asked to submit written memorials. The knockout round of 16 was opened to the 16 teams that received the highest grades in the preliminary oral rounds. Eight winning teams then square off in the quarterfinals, with the top four teams moving on to the semifinals and the best two to the finals.

The virtual rounds took place this year, and the Universities that qualified for the round of eight are: University of Lusaka Zambia, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, Cavendish University Uganda, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Nigeria, University of Nairobi Kenya, University of Ilorin Nigeria, Adekunle Ajasin University, Nigeria and Starford International University South Sudan.
In conclusion of the Third Edition of FIAE International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition 2024 hosted in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. At the end of the competition, University of Nairobi emerged as the winner while Cavendish University, Uganda came second, University of Ilorin and Adekunle Ajasin University came third and fourth respectively. The competition was hugely supported by individuals and organizations numerous to mention. However, the Best Memorial for the Prosecution award goes to university of Nairobi, Best Memorial for the Defense goes to Addis Ababa University, Best Oralist to Lindsey from University of Nairobi, Kenya and the Best Spirit of the Competition award to Starford International University South Sudan.
Their final argument delivered a compelling and well-supported rationale, which impressed the Judges both in substance and presentation. The students’ dedication, commitment, and hard work truly paid off as they were able to outshine their competitors and secure the victory.
Firdaous Initiative for Academic Excellence (FIAE) introduces the FIAE International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition previously conducted under Firdaous Integrated Services (FIS), wherein students across different law schools in Africa argue a hypothetical case on International Humanitarian Law before the yet-to-be-established African Court of Justice and Human Rights.
