Daily Briefing: Man Accused of Trying to Assassinate Malian President Dies in Custody

The attack took place during prayers for the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha at Bamako’s Grand Mosque on Tuesday. Goïta was immediately supported by his bodyguards who overpowered the attacker.

The suspect, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken into custody following the assassination attempt.

“During investigations… his health deteriorated” and he was then hospitalised, but “unfortunately, he has died,” the government statement noted.

“An autopsy was immediately ordered to determine the causes of his death,” the statement said.

Mali’s leader, Colonel Goïta masterminds two coups in less than a year, including the one that overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta on August 18, 2020.

He survived the attack unharmed. Goïta later appeared on state TV to say he was doing “very well” and downplayed the significance of the assault.
