Ethiopia starts filling the Grand Renaissance dam- Minister says

After over a decade of failed talks, Ethiopia has taken controversial action by beginning to fill the dam, a day after talks with Sudan and Egypt on the issue became deadlocked.

On Wednesday, Ethiopian water minister, Seleshi Bekele, said in comments broadcast on television that “the construction of the dam and the filling of the water go hand in hand.”

The dam filling is now underway in conformity with the normal process of the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Dr. Sileshi indicated.

Grand Renaissance dam, sometimes referred to as Hidase Dam, which Ethiopia is built on the Blue Nile River.

Constructions in the dam started on April 2, 2011 at a cost of $4.8 billion. It was built by the Italian construction and engineering company Salini Impergilo.

The Grand Renaissance dam will be a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity-type, comprising of two power stations, three spillways and a saddle dam.
