Kenyan police arrested the county’s governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko who is known for his lavish lifestyle.
Kenya’s anti-corruption commission says the governor of Nairobi has been arrested while trying to flee prosecution for alleged money laundering and other crimes, AP News reports. He was taken handcuffed by a police car to the headquarters of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Mike Mbuvi Sonko and his associates were accused of conspiracy to commit corruption, having benefitted from irregular procurement and payments of $3.5m (3.1 million euros) and failure to comply with other related laws, said the Chief public prosecutor Noordin Haji during a news conference.

High corruption levels have held back most African country’s economic competitiveness. Every sector of the economy is penetrated by corruption syndrome like fraud in public procurement and tax evasion in Kenya.
Corruption, active and passive bribery, abuse of office and bribing a foreign public official are criminalized under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003, in addition to the Bribery Act of 2016 which strengthens the fight against the supply-side of corruption.
