President Hage Geingob takes lead in general election results. His first term was marred by a recession that stirred anger against SWAPO, which continues to bask in the legacy of the liberation struggle.
A local news source indicated that the current president preemptively posted a victory announcement on social media on Saturday afternoon, following an update from the Electoral Commission of Namibia indicating that the incumbent is in the lead.
The Namibia electoral commission said that President Hage Geingob led with 57% of the vote while opposition challenger Dr. Panduleni Itula had 28% a report noted.
Ex-dentist Panduleni Itula, has garnered support among jobless young people in the election. Itula still maintain is SWAPO membership, but was an independent candidate in the election.
Namibian Mixed Reality and the Corruption Allegations
Before the election, the ruling party was shaken by bribery allegations of two former cabinet ministers linked to fishing quotas to an International company. Although, these corruption allegations later lead to their resignation and slipped President Geingob’s popularity.
The ruling party, has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party was originally formed to advocate immediate Namibian independence from South Africa.
